Maybe it’s because Gareth Southgate seems like a kind leader, and a win for a manager who actually cares about his players’ feelings—supporting them through media doubts and horrible hate—is kind of a win for us all? Or maybe there’s just a general sense of the “impossible being reachable” floating about the UK right now, given we’ve just had an election with a result that doesn’t appear to have totally fucked the country for the first time in decades. Whatever the case, let’s embrace it: it’s bloody coming home, isn’t it. And even if it doesn’t, at least we’ll all be unified in our horrendous post-match hangovers come Monday morning.
